One of four potato chip fryers at Better Made Snack Foods exploded this morning, blowing out windows at the company’s plant on Detroit’s east side but not injuring any workers, the firm’s CEO said.
Salvatore Cipriano, CEO of Better Made on Gratiot north of I-94, said a heat exchanger that circulates oil in a fryer used to cook the company’s potato chips exploded, releasing pressure but not igniting. Glass in some windows blew out and some ceiling panels dropped, Cipriano said.
“Absolutely nobody got hurt, but it did do some damage,” Cipriano said. “We don’t know exactly what caused it or what the problem was. That’s what we’re investigating now.”
The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. About 80 or 90 employees were evacuated and later sent home, and the company expects all operations to be running again by Monday, Cipriano said.
The Detroit Fire Capt. Kwaku Atara confirmed no injuries were reported. He said fire crews responded to the call and have since left the scene.
